Yesterday the Government announced a “Freedom or Great Repeal Bill” to undo the worst excesses of Labour authoritarianism. If many of the policies therein seem familiar it’s because they seem to have been cherry-picked from the Freedom Bill that the Liberal Democrats put together for the Convention on Modern Liberty last year. After the publication of that Freedom Bill, the Conservatives were also heard to say they would repeal various Labour Acts of Parliament, though they were much less specific about which ones.

I thought it would be interesting to compare the contents of the Liberal Democrat Freedom Bill with the new Government’s version:

Liberal Democrat Freedom Bill

Government “Freedom or Great Repeal Bill”

Restore the right to protest in Parliament Square, at the heart of our democracy.

Strengthen freedom of information by giving greater powers to the Information Commissioner and reducing exemptions.

Scrap the ministerial veto which allowed the Government to block the release of Cabinet minutes relating to the Iraq war.

Require explicit parental consent for biometric information to be taken from children.

Outlaw the finger-printing of children at school without parental permission.

Regulate CCTV following a Royal Commission on cameras.

Further regulation of CCTV.

A review of libel laws to protect freedom of speech.

Ending of storage of internet and email records without good reason.

A new mechanism to prevent the proliferation of unnecessary new criminal offences.

End the detention of children for immigration purposes.

What do I conclude from this comparison? That the Government’s outline proposals are a massive step in the right direction however there is still more work to do.

The convention on modern liberty is being held today in London, around the country and online. I’m tuned into the live webcast and the flurry of tweets tagged with either #coml or #modernliberty. One common question being asked is “what happens next?” What is to be done about liberty in the United Kingdom and who should do it? I’ve heard a small number of good suggestions and calls to arms so far which I’ve listed below. I’ll continue to update this as the conference progresses.

Are you at the conference? Have I missed anything? What do you think should we should do next?

Write to your MP and tell them you refuse consent for your data to be shared across Government, and to vote down Clause 152 of the Coroners and Justice Bill.

Sign up to actions on the convention’s activist website.

Read the green paper Governance of Britain and participate in the debate.

Make a list of liberty issues and ask your elected representatives about their position on them. Make it clear to them that these issues matter to you and your support rests on the quality of their answers.

Sign up to and support a second Convention on Modern Liberty in February 2010.

The public don’t know what’s going on; your job it to go out and tell them (via Alex Lambert).

Vote in the next general election!

And here’s a list of coverage I’ve enjoyed on the web today (in order of discovery):
